Lamp House Music Summer Schools prove roaring success

Recent Summer Schools held by Lamp House Music, based in Haddington, have been deemed a success, by the children attending, their parents, the musicians involved and the Lamp House Music owners themselves.

In total four bands were formed – ‘4 Scots & An American’, ‘Untouchable’, ‘Birds in a Cage’ and ‘The Band With No Name’.  The children all attended Master Classes with professional musicians and then worked together as bands in their personal rehearsal studios, writing and rehearsing a song written by themselves.  The songs were then recorded and a CD produced, finished off with a band photograph and personally designed front cover.

Parents were invited to a performance by the bands at the end of the week, then came a special surprise – the songs were repeatedly aired on East Coast FM over the course of the following week.  Last week’s songs can be heard each day of wb 13th August on East Coast FM’s ‘The School Bell’, between 6-8pm every day.

Children involved were aged between ten and fifteen.  They came from across East Lothian, and also Edinburgh and Midlothian, there was even an American attendee, who was staying in North Berwick on holiday.  All had varying amounts of musical experience, indeed some had never played an instrument before, so the sense of achievement was high, as was the element of fun.

News of the success of the Summer Schools is spreading fast, so much so that Lamp House Music are responding to demand with a newly announced Autumn School, which will take place the week beginning Monday 15th October – this will follow the same format as the Summer School and places can be booked with immediate effect.

Master Classes and Musicians

Three Master Classes were taught – Guitar, Vocals, Drums and Music Production – with Lamp House Music collaborating with the Bridge Centre and John Gray Centre who each hosted a workshop.

The musicians, Heather MacLeod (vocals), Vini Bonnar (drums), Chris Aien (guitar), Gavin McDougall (production) were hand picked by Lamp House Music specifically for their skills, experience and reputation.

The musicians spent the mornings delivering their Master Class then the rest of the day working closely with the children, assisting them with their song writing and developing and improving their musical skills and technique.
