Early Musicianship for ages 4–7
Where the journey begins
We are often asked, “When should my child start an instrument?”
Our answer is that learning music starts much before learning an instrument.
Over the years, we’ve seen how much easier that first instrument can be when a child already knows how to listen, sing, feel a beat, copy a rhythm and hear music for themselves.
This is what our Early Musicianship classes are for.
Through singing, clapping, movement, rhythm games and lots of active music-making, we can help children build the musical foundations they will eventually take with them to the piano, violin, guitar, drums, clarinet or wherever their musical journey leads.
Our little musicians grow through three stages
Children develop at different speeds, so we don’t move them onto an instrument simply because they’ve reached a certain age or completed a certain number of terms.
Instead, we get to know them and watch their musical skills grow.
Music Explorer- learning how to take part in music.
Learning to listen, join in, sing, move, clap and, most importantly, have a go.
Music Maker – hearing music, remembering it and making it.
Growing in confidence and becoming more independent with singing, rhythm, musical memory and hearing.
Young Musician – Being ready to take music to an instrument.
Showing us that those important foundations are becoming secure; rhythm, pitch, singing, listening and early music reading.
So, when can they start an instrument?
We will help you know when the time is right.
As we get to know your child, we’ll keep an eye on their progress and let you know when we think they’re ready to start transferring those skills onto an instrument.
And Early Musicianship doesn’t necessarily stop there. Some of our children continue these classes alongside their first instrumental lessons – a brilliant way to keep developing their ears and musicianship while their hands learn something completely new.
And yes, they’ll get to explore instruments too!
Children are naturally fascinated by instruments, and we absolutely want them to have the chance to try them.
Our weekly 45 minutes together, though, is precious learning time. We use it primarily to develop the musician, rather than trying to squeeze lots of different instruments into every class.
That’s why we also run Musical Instrument Discovery sessions and holiday camps, where we have much more time to get instruments out, try lots of them and discover what each child might be drawn to.
Early Musicianship develops the musician.
Musical Instrument Discovery helps them discover what they might love to play.
